The One Beach In Massachusetts Where You Can Drive Right Up To The Water

Nauset Beach is a narrow bit of beach that sticks out from the "elbow" of Cape Cod in Chatham. It extends out into the sea towards Monomoy. It’s a gorgeous spot that is known for being a great spot to spot seals in the summer, but it’s also one of the few beaches in Massachusetts that allows vehicles to drive on the sand.

Over sand vehicles (ORVs) are permitted at Nauset Beach on certain trails, but most of the beach is accessible. Access is sometimes limited by erosion or protected piping plover nesting sites, but you can expect to be able to drive along the sane on most spring and summer days.

Once you get to the beach and pull up to your favorite spot, you’ll be able to experience beautiful views out over the Atlantic and might even spot a few seals flopping around on the shore. It’s extremely important that you don’t approach the seals and maybe even more important that you don’t get in the water if seals are present. This is because the arrival of seals often means the arrival of sharks. Still, the beach is a beautiful place to swim and play when seals aren’t about.

Permits are required to use your vehicle at Nauset Beach. If you have a 2018 permit, you can use it until April 30, 2019. After that point, you’ll need a 2019 permit. There are also certain tire widths your vehicle must conform to in order to keep your vehicle from getting stuck. Generally, smaller tire sizes mean the vehicle has to work harder and is more likely to dig its way into the sand. You’ll need to be towed at your own expense if you get stuck, so plan carefully.
