Set into the woods of Holyoke, Massachusetts is a creepy spot that feels like something hapless hikers might stumble upon in a horror film. The Eyrie House Ruins are one of the Bay State’s hidden historical gems and the perfect destination for a spooky hike.

The Eyrie House Ruins in Mt. Tom State Reservation are a creepy series of stone walls and arches.

These walkable ruins date back to the 1800s. Eyrie House was once a glamorous hotel that catered to wealthy socialites.

People would come from far and wide to dine at the dazzling hotel restaurant and enjoy the breathtaking mountain scenery.

Unfortunately, it was the hotel’s enterprising owner who inadvertently turned the thriving business to a pile of rubble one spring evening.

William Street was attempting to start a funeral pyre for two dead horses when the flames got out of control and consumed the entire mountaintop.

Street had neglected to take out an insurance policy on his estate. Unable to rebuild, he became a recluse and lived in near poverty.

Today, the Eyrie House Ruins are fully explorable and a great hiking destination. Head to the park’s Ranger Station and walk about two miles down the old road leading into the reservation.

This spot is undeniably beautiful, but it has a backstory straight out of a ghost story.
