Martha’s Vineyard is such a magical place to visit. From pristine beaches to whimsical gingerbread cottages to historic lighthouses, this little island is a true Massachusetts gem. If you are like most people (myself included), you probably haven’t thought about visiting the Vineyard during the off-season. However, if you are looking to attend a fantastic Christmas celebration, you may want to book a seat on the island ferry ASAP!
2023 marks the 42nd annual Christmas in Edgartown celebration. This year’s event takes place from December 7-10.
For three days, the beautiful Martha’s Vineyard beach town will be transformed into a magical winter wonderland full of music, crafts, shopping, children’s events, food, and some friendly holiday competitions. The event is put on by the Edgartown Board of Trade. I can’t believe how many festive events are packed into one short weekend!
The celebration kicks off Friday evening with the annual lighting of the Edgartown Lighthouse. Come see the historic landmark shine bright with holiday lights.
The lighting takes place promptly at 6 p.m. but I recommend coming early to get a prime viewing spot.

Another highlight of the weekend is the Christmas In Edgartown Parade, which rolls down Main Street on Saturday afternoon. The parade features music, floats, fire trucks, and special holiday visitors.
And if you missed seeing Santa at the parade (or if you just can’t get enough of that jolly old soul), there will be more opportunities to meet up with him throughout the weekend. St. Nick will also be making appearances at the pancake breakfast, lighthouse ceremony, and Kismet Outfitters Merry Fishmas Celebration!
Other family-friendly activities include horse-drawn carriage rides, a fun run, gingerbread house making, an Elf On The Shelf scavenger hunt, and festive photo opportunities.
A visit to the Christmas in Edgartown event is the perfect time to check some holiday gifts off of your to-buy list. There will be numerous local businesses participating in the event and you will have the opportunity to purchase artwork, gifts, apparel, cookies, and even some presents for your pup.
Proceeds from many of these items will support local charities.
If you enjoy some Christmas competition, Christmas in Edgartown is your holiday event! I’ve already mentioned the fun run and scavenger hunt, but there will also be an ugly sweater competition, a Buddy the Elf Breakfast Spaghetti Eating Competition, a 5K Walk or Run, and a holiday dog show.
