Massachusetts is steeped in history. It seems like everywhere you look, there’s another historic building or landmark. This little graveyard in Boston is home to some of the state’s earliest residents, and supposedly…some of them aren’t resting in peace.
Central Burying Ground is a small graveyard in Boston. It’s one of the oldest cemeteries in the country, and may even be haunted.
First established in 1756, it holds the remains of such illustrious Bay Staters as Charles Sprague, one of the nation’s first poets; Gilbert Stuart, portrait painter to George Washington; and famed composer William Billings.
Rumor has it that this cemetery is one of the most haunted places in the state. Many people have reported ghostly sightings of men in what appear to be old military uniforms.
It turns out that during the construction of the Tremont Street station of the Boston subway in 1894, over 900 bodies were unearthed and reinterred in a mass grave in cemetery. It’s said that they were the remains of British soldiers from the Revolutionary War.
Though none of these reported spooky sightings can be confirmed, they’re certainly enough to give you goosebumps. Are you brave enough to visit after dark?
