Do you love a good ghost story? This creepy little cemetery in Massachusetts is the setting for one of the spookiest in the whole state. Only the bravest souls will want to visit Old Hill Burying Ground in Newburyport after dark. Here’s why.
Old Hill Cemetery is also known as Old Hill Burial Ground and Sawyer Hill Burying Ground. But whatever you call it, this place has a seriously spooky history.
The cemetery was established in 1729 and is a tangle of ancient headstones and tombs.
The most infamous of these is the Pierce Family Tomb, an above-ground crypt with the inscription "1863 Pierce."
Seven members of the Pierce family have been laid to rest here. One drowned, three died of tuberculosis, and one was a Civil War veteran.
For over 100 years, the cemetery has been said to be haunted by the disquiet ghosts of the Pierce family…and with good reason.
The tomb has been desecrated multiple times in some pretty horrific ways.
In 1925, teenage boys dug their way into the crypt and unclothed the mummified corpses inside. They propped the bodies up as if they were having dinner, and then the boys danced around the graveyard wearing the moldering clothes of the dead.
The boys were caught by the police, but another group of teens in 1985 found their way into the tomb. They reportedly drank beer with the corpses, poured alcohol down their throats, and performed other darker deeds.
And again in 2005, a man performing community service apparently broke into the tomb, severed the head of one skeleton and danced around the cemetery with it.
Though all the people above were caught and punished, locals have spoken of strange sounds, angry screams, and visions in the graveyard.
People have reported scratching sounds from inside the tomb and pale figures darting between the headstones.
Animals? Vandals? Maybe. But if you’re at all doubtful, this might be one cemetery you want to avoid after dark.
