Lying on the banks of the Charles River west of Boston, the tiny town of Dover is surrounded by natural beauty. Sure, it’s within commuting distance of the city but, from the number of green spaces ringing the town, you’d never guess how close this rural retreat is to urban life. Here are six areas of natural splendor you can explore from Dover:
Within the boundaries of this revived CSA farm is an approximately one-mile long, loop trail. Amble through varied terrain, which encompasses woods and wetlands. From here, you can connect to the Hale Reservation to extend your adventure. Powisset Farm is free to visit and you can find it at 39 Powisset Street in Dover.
This charming spot includes three ponds and offers trails ranging from the very short 0.4-mile Family Trail to the 2.5-mile long Strawberry Hill Trail. If it’s tranquility you’re seeking, bear in mind that the organization’s main goal is to provide summer camps for kids and, in summer, 15,000 children will also be enjoying this space! Hale Reservation spans Dover and Westwood but the main entrance is at 80 Carby Street in Westwood.
…the ruins of an old mill, scenic stonework, and more. You can reach the woodlands via the entrance on Powisset Street. In fact, these three green spaces all flow into each other – useful to know if you’re interested in building a long day hike.
This reservation stretches across Natick and Dover. It was once settled by the Pegan Indians then, later, by farmers. At 410 feet, Pegan Hill offers pleasing views and a one-mile long hiking trail from which to enjoy them. The entrance is located on Pegan Lane in Dover.
You might think that Dover has already yielded more natural beauty than you ever imagined, but there’s more! Peters Reservation abuts the Charles River and is a great spot for kayakers and canoers. More into hiking? There are 2.5 miles of trails that combine water and woodland views for a tranquil walking experience. Access this reservation from Farm Street.
Chase Woodlands is also accessible from Farm Street and you can easily hike between Peters Reservation and this lovely spot, which includes 2.5 miles of trails that lead you under a pretty canopy of trees. Stone walls add to the appeal of this 85-acre oasis.
These pristine places showcase some of the enticing scenery around Dover. Beyond the town’s boundaries, even more recreational opportunities await both in nearby Natick and in Medfield.
