Each city in the U.S. has forged its own identity, and people are a large part of what gives a place its character. While Bostonians are a diverse bunch, there are some collective habits that we adopt over time. Conversely, there are some things that Bostonians just won’t do. Here are 12 such behaviors:
1. Desecrate clam chowder by adding tomatoes.
Most of the time, tomatoes are welcome in dishes. This is the exception.
2. Order seafood when visiting a landlocked state.
If it comes from a river or lake, fine. But we know fresh seafood and, if it's had to travel any distance, it's unlikely to meet our expectations.
3. Eat a hot dog on a bun that looks like this.
When these are clearly superior!
4. Drive below the speed limit.
You will get the occasional person puttering along in the left lane but they are not popular.
5. Move your car from a cheap or free parking spot...
...without considering all other possibilities first.
6. Relocate a space saver...
...and expect to have a cordial relationship with your neighbors. Although space saving is only legal for 48 hours after a storm.
7. Consider this an emergency.
This is a light dusting. Charming even. Inches need to be approaching double digits before we let it slow us down.
8. Let a little weather hold us back.
We walk the dog in a blizzard, we jog in its aftermath, we ski down the streets when they're really buried.
9. Praise the Yankees.
Especially not in public. Maybe you've made the smart decision to relocate here from New York, but keep your team affiliations on the DL!
10. Decide that it's too cold for iced coffee.
When you love a beverage, you love it year round.
11. Believe that Boston and its suburbs are the same thing.
The suburbs may seem to bleed into Boston, but their identities are distinct from that of the city.
12. Move away from the best city in the U.S. for good and by choice.
