Although Bostonians are a diverse bunch, over the years, we tend to adopt some of the hobbies, habits, and attitudes that are common throughout the city. Even when we travel to other countries or states, these stick with us. Here are 9 ways to spot a Bostonian, even when they’re far from home:
1. We're in a Dunkin’ Donuts.
You have a better chance of taking the Boston out of the Bostonian than the Bostonian out of Dunks (without a fight). Coffee runs through our veins.
2. We're wearing one of these…
…or these.
We love our sports teams and showing that through our choice of clothing is always in fashion.
3. We're hating on New York.
We're dedicated to this rivalry. The Curse of the Bambino lasted for 86 years. That is literally a lifetime and, although this isn’t the only reason New York is our rival, we’re not likely to forget it anytime soon.
4. We just cut you off and are about to do the same to someone else.
We typically drive in a city that rarely uses a grid system, that is under construction whenever it isn’t winter, and with street signs that add to the confusion rather than easing it. The bar for what counts as acceptable driving is pretty low.
5. We’re jogging in shorts when there’s snow on the ground.
Bostonians have grit. If you're cold, just run faster!
6. We're listening to the Dropkick Murphys.
Even people who don’t follow this band, which started in Quincy, have probably heard "I’m Shipping Up To Boston." The song was featured in the movie The Departed . "We always wanted to be that band that didn’t forget where they came from," said Ken Casey, the band’s vocalist/bassist. Mission accomplished.
7. We’re trying to order grapenut pudding...
Juliet White
...or one of the other delicious dishes that are unique to Boston or New England.
8. We’re eating pizza with broccoli on it.
Personally, I’ve never ordered broccoli on a pizza, but every pizza joint seems to offer it so presumably plenty of Bay Staters are out there chowing down on broccoli pizza.
9. Our accent
You may not be able to tell a Bostonian just by looking at us, but the Boston accent is pretty distinctive, as is our wicked slang.
