There’s nothing quite so alluring as the thrill of the illicit. However, most activities covered by that adjective can interrupt your adult life in… well, unwanted ways. That’s the appeal of the speakeasy restaurant. You get the kick of doing something a little risqué without the fallout of social media photos to haunt you for years to come. If you’re in the mood to shake things up or are simply fascinated by life in the 1920s, you owe it to yourself to visit a speakeasy.
Prohibition lasted from 1920 until 1933, during which time the Eighteenth Amendment made the production, sale, and transportation of alcohol illegal in the U.S. Carrie Nation became the face of the Temperance Movement.
Nation had been married to a man who died from alcoholism and she believed that God was guiding her to destroy alcohol supplies. Initially, she used rocks but soon she graduated to hatchets. While Nation was a complicated figure, who also worked to advance women’s rights, her hatchet habit made her the enemy of bars across the country.
In the years since Prohibition ended, several bars have adopted Nation's name, in defiance of her cause. That's the case with Carrie Nation in Boston, a restaurant and speakeasy located in Beacon Hill.
This luxe establishment embraces the 1920s theme. Once you step inside, it's easy to get swept up in an era of glitz and elegance.
The restaurant is in the front while the speakeasy-inspired bar is hidden in the back down a corridor...
...lined with period-appropriate photographs.
See how the country was divided over the issue of alcohol, with the Temperance Movement on one side…
…and the flappers on the other.
Inside the dark speakeasy, discover a billiards area, places to lounge, and — of course — a bar.
This Carrie Nation offers artisan classic cocktails that feature local and top shelf spirits. Bitters are crafted in-house and juices are freshly squeezed each day.
As you savor a vintage-inspired beverage, let your imagination take you back in time…
Can't you hear the strains of jazz?
In addition to stellar food, the restaurant sometimes does offer live jazz. There are also regular drag brunch buffets on Sundays (tickets needed).
For a fast, fun time, this speakeasy — at 11 Beacon Street in Boston — is the place to escape the present!
