The 1980s were a decade of memorable fashion mistakes… er, choices… and music we’ll love for years to come. There are plenty of moments that have probably stuck with you if you grew up in this decade, from the fall of the Berlin Wall and the Challenger Explosion, to the launch of MTV. But what about memories specific to Boston? Here are 10 things you’ll remember if you grew up in the 80s in Boston:
1. Everyone knew our name.
Cheers first aired in September 1982 and, although it floundered initially, the Boston-based show went on to become one of the most beloved TV shows ever made.
2. Boston Harbor's "before" and "after."
Judge David Mazzone ruled that: "the law secures to the people the right to a clean harbor." That judgement launched a public works project that transformed Boston Harbor from one of the dirtiest in the country to one of the cleanest.
3. We cheered on the Celtics...
...to victory after victory. Three championships in the space of a decade!
4. The first J. P. Licks opened in... well, JP.
There's a reason that, more than three decades later, people still flock to the company's 13 ice cream stores.
5. Trident Booksellers and Café was born in 1984.
Food and books. When done right, it’s a winning combination.
6. The Hynes Convention Center was constructed in Back Bay.
This huge building can host 10,000 people!
7. The Big Dig was still in the planning stages...
...So we had no idea what was coming.
8. In 1986, Halley’s Comet soared overhead.
Not to worry if you missed it. Halley's Comet is supposed to be coming back this way in 2061!
9. Kennedy's closed its flagship store at the intersection of Summer and Hawley Streets.
A sad loss.
10. But at least we could still go shopping at Filene’s Basement and Bradlees.
Remember when Bradlees and Stop and Shop were always side by side?
