Are you on the market for a ghoulishly good deal on a historic home? Then you’re in luck – the infamous Lizzie Borden house is up for sale.
Keep reading for the details of Massachusetts’ most famous murder and how you can snag this piece of history for yourself.
No Massachusetts child can make it through school without hearing the rhyme, “Lizzie Borden took an axe and gave her mother 40 whacks; when she saw what she had done, she gave her father 41.”
Lizzie Andrew Borden was born in 1860 to Sarah and Andrew Borden. She grew up in Fall River, where her father made his fortune as a textile mill director, property developer, and … casket seller.
Lizzie’s mother Sarah died when Lizzie was 32. Her father then married Abby Gray, and tensions in the household grew when Andrew began gifting property to members of his new wife’s extended family.
The murders occurred on August 4, 1892. The details of the killings are debated to this day, but what isn’t in question is that Lizzie’s stepmother was struck in the head with a hatchet at least 18 times between 9:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m.
The Bordens’ maid testified that Lizzie was upstairs with her stepmother at the time of the murder and that she heard Lizzie laughing, though Borden denied this.
Andrew Borden returned home from a visit with family at 10:30 a.m., and Lizzie said she helped her father take off his boots before seeing him take a nap on the sofa.
He was struck multiple times in the head with a hatchet sometime before 11 a.m. Chillingly, Andrew Borden’s body was found with his boots still on.
Lizzie Borden was ultimately acquitted of the murders. The jury, pictured above, could not find enough concrete evidence to convict her.
However, Borden is widely considered the prime suspect in the murders. On the day of her acquittal, she stated that she was the “happiest woman in the world.”
The Borden home itself is a 19th-century jewel. With a subdued green exterior and an immaculate period-appropriate interior, it truly feels like a time capsule.
The house is decorated just as it would have been on the day of the murders, including the unmistakable sofa where the body of Andrew Borden was found and photographed.
The sellers aren’t shy about embracing the creepy history of the property. The listing encourages potential buyers to picture themselves “serving fun hatchet cookies” to guests.
The Borden house has been operated as a tourist spot for years and is one of the most popular attractions in New England.
The property comes complete with a gift shop area and the option to also buy the mansion where Lizzie Borden moved after the trial.
