Enjoying an afternoon outside in Massachusetts is a great way to remember why we love it here any time of year. Between spending time at the beach and exploring state forests and parks, there are so many ways to refresh the soul and exercise our minds—just by taking a walk! But with so many outdoor options here, it can be hard to narrow down the list when there’s a specific experience you’d like to have. So, if you’re looking for more on a walk and want to appreciate a different sort of landscape, you’ll want to consider this forest hike leading to swampland.
The Douglas State Forest offers tons in the way of nature and outdoor beauty. Located just along the border of Connecticut and Rhode Island, the area includes 5.907 acres of land to get lost in.
While you’ll find swamp in other areas of New England and even Massachusetts, this particular type of swampland is quite special. It can only be found in a few spots on the planet and, lucky for us, it’s right here!
The boardwalk trail takes visitors through striking white cedars. They’ve got pale trunks with moss that circles the branches and roots. Things here feel ethereal.
The swamp area is about five acres and you’re likely to spend much of the walk on your own. While it’s absolutely beautiful, it’s not quite as popular as you’d think.
Douglas State Forest is located in central Massachusetts. It’s near some lovely restaurants as well, so we recommend you make a day of it. For more information check out the Discover Central Massachusetts website here.
