Douglas State Forest is home to one of the prettiest hikes in the state. Bordering both Connecticut and Rhode Island, this forest offers 5,907 acres to explore. However, the most unique feature of this park is the boardwalk trail that winds right through a rare Atlantic White Cedar swamp.
This type of swampland is exceedingly special and only found in a few places on Earth. The trail will take you over a sturdy boardwalk and among enchanting white cedars. Their trunks are strikingly pale and straight, and the moss that clings to their branches and roots gives the entire area a fairytale vibe.

The five-acre swamp is a protected area that few people see simply because the boardwalk trail isn't well-known outside of the local region. The entire trail is about 5.6 miles round-trip, but the boardwalk portion is much shorter. Be sure to bring your camera and take plenty of pictures. The swamp is particularly stunning in the spring and autumn.

Besides the boardwalk trail, the park is also home to Wallum Lake and plenty of other hiking paths. The lake is the perfect spot for a fall picnic or a summer swim, and you can even fish in its waters. You'll also find plenty of grassy corners and interesting flora along the forest's paths. There are also two pavilions and restrooms available for public use.
