Henry David Thoreau spent three years living by the banks of Walden pond between 1845 and 1847. His time there inspired him to pen Walden, a love letter to the beauty of the area and one of the most enduring works of American literature. It’s considered the birthplace of the conservation movement, and the starting point for the modern idea of ecological preservation.
Modern visitors are just as enchanted with the 102-foot deep glacial kettle-hole pond. Besides 2680 acres of undeveloped forest, known as “Walden Woods,” this park is a classic summer destination for locals and tourists.
Try the 1.7-mile hike around the pond. It’s perfect for kids and those who want a bit of fresh air paired with a beautiful view. Tip: trees sometimes obscure the pond when you’re following the trail, but walking along the shoreline is just as easy.
Walden Pond features some of the warmest waters and prettiest views in the Concord area, so it’s a pretty popular swimming hole during the summer months. Try to get there before noon for the best chance at a good parking spot and prime beach real estate.
A visit to this state park isn’t complete without popping in to see the Thoreau homestead. The simple cabin contains a replica of the author’s living quarters, complete with his bed, desk and stove. There’s a year-round guide program that does a great job of bringing the history of this spot to life.
Daily parking is $8 for Massachusetts plates and $10 for out-of-state plates. The park is open year-round for day use, though hours may vary throughout the year.
