I'm an east coast girl living in a west coast world. I grew up in New England before moving to SoCal for several years. I then lived in NYC or a year before moving to AZ in 2009. I worked in the entertainment industry for many years of my adult life and have a deep love for photography, writing, and traveling around the U.S. as well as to far-flung locations around the world. Travel is my life and writing about it is a dream!
Some of us love a good scare once in a while. If you love spooky and/or abandoned places, there are many around the Bay State that are worth visiting. For example, you can hike to an abandoned fort on Peddocks Island in Boston Harbor or even visit a creepy ghost town that will surely send chills down your spine. Perhaps you’ll want to visit one of our best-known zoos that has an abandoned section outside its perimeter. Insider came out with its list of the eeriest abandoned places in every state, and the abandoned bear cages in Massachusetts that are found at Franklin Park Zoo made the list.
Franklin Park Zoo is a beloved 72-acre attraction in Boston that features a wide variety of animals from around the globe. But there is one part of this zoo you may not even know about.
When the zoo first opened in 1912, admission was free and people came from all over the state to view its collection of animals. The bears, in particular, were a big draw to the park.
Over time, the park fell into disrepair and was eventually taken over by the city in 1958. A fence was built around the zoo area except for the bear cages for some reason.
Over time and to this day, the abandoned bear pens have succumbed to the elements as Mother Nature reclaims the land. What you see there now is an eerie sight.
While you are not allowed to trespass per the posted "No Trespassing" signs, you can view the area from a safe distance. If you enjoy abandoned places and urban exploration, the bear cages at Franklin Park Zoo are a great place to photograph.
