Depending on what region of Maryland you live in, there are some words you will often hear, and others you won’t. Travel out of state, and you’ll realize just how different the lingo really is. Here are 12 words people in Maryland just don’t understand.
1. Pop
As charmingly retro as pop may sound, here in Maryland we call it soda.
2. Snow Cone
This classic summer treat is known as a sno-ball, especially in Baltimore.
3. Bubbler
We're not too terribly far from some of the New England states, where this is known as a bubbler. Here, it's a water fountain.
4. Supper
Head to places like Pennsylvania, and you'll hear folks call it supper. We know it as dinner.
5. Buggy
It's called a shopping cart, and it's best when filled to the brim with seafood and Old Bay.
6. Y'all
This one is tricky. If you have family from the south, you may have grown up hearing the word y'all quite a bit. You won't likely hear that word in other areas of the state.
7. National Bohemian
We lovingly refer to this iconic beer as Natty Boh. Period.
8. Honey
Americans all over the country use the word honey as an endearing term. In Maryland, you're more likely to hear hon or hun.
9. Teeter-totter
This playground staple is mostly referred to as a seesaw in Maryland.
10. Jimmies
They're sprinkles and they're amazing.
11. Hero or hoagie
Although we call 'em subs, they sure do taste heroic.
12. Sack
Believe it or not, if you ask for a sack in some states, the grocer will hand you a paper bag. Weird.
