There’s no need to wait until you have a few days off of work to take a trip. The Old Line State is filled with places that are perfect for a quick day trip or weekend getaway. The next time your need for adventure strikes, consider checking out one of the below 13 spots.
1. National Harbor
Shopping, restaurants, and scenery await at the National Harbor. Be sure to take a ride on the Capital Wheel, where you can get sky high views of Maryland, Virginia, and even DC!
2. Ocean City
Ocean City may best be enjoyed during summer, but some folks head here year-round. The weather is chillier, but the boardwalk is quieter and the hotels have superb deals.
3. Ellicott City
This charming Main Street has an abundance of unique shops, including several antique stores. Be sure to bring a big bag to carry all the treasures you'll find.
4. Deep Creek Lake
Maryland's largest lake is great for a weekend day trip. Rent a nearby cabin and enjoy the views, go fishing, or partake in water sports.
5. St. Michaels
This waterside town is great for shopping, eating, and taking in the sights. Be sure to check out the town website because there is always something going on.
6. Great Falls
This spot on the Potomac is nestled between Maryland and Virginia. Seeing the rapids is a relaxing experience, or head to the nearby Billy Goat Trail and hike along this scenic natural wonder.
7. Chestertown
Charming eateries and shops are abundant in historic Chestertown. Spend a day strolling and exploring, or visit during October for the annual Harry Potter Festival!
8. Solomons
For some of the best sunrises and sunsets around, head to Solomons Island. If you like a more peaceful experience, then this is the place to be.
9. Calvert Cliffs State Park
Maryland has dozens of state parks worth exploring but few are as unique as Calvert Cliffs State Park. Hike the 1.8 mile trail to the cliffs and then hunt for fossils, including shark teeth!
10. C & O Canal
This sprawling towpath runs from DC to Cumberland, so choose a spot to explore and enjoy. Walk, jog, or bicycle along the path and take in the gorgeous sights along the way.
11. Annapolis
Maryland's capital city is great for a day trip. There are shops to see, restaurants in which to chow down, and historic sites to explore. The water views aren't too shabby, either.
12. Antietam Battlefield
If you love history, then this spot is a must-visit at least once. Walk along Bloody Lane or enjoy the historic beauty of Burnside Bridge, and more. This is a humbling place for any Marylander, or American.
13. Assateague Island
Who could resist a day trip to see wild horses? This beachy barrier island is beautiful, with views of the Atlantic, white sand, wetlands, and camping spots. It's not hard to see why Assateague Island is a local favorite.
