Maryland has a several islands that are worth visiting, a handful of which we previously featured here . Of those that are inhabited by humans, only one is reachable strictly by boat. Check out this historic and fascinating island that’s the last of its kind in the state.
If Smith Island sounds familiar, then you may have heard of the iconic multi-layered cake that originated on the island.
While this isolated spot is known for Smith Island Cake, it's also the home of local crabbers and fishermen. Several of the families who still live here have roots on the island that that go back for generations.
Life on Smith Island is simple and serene. With approximately 300 residents, everyone knows one another. It's truly like taking a step back in time.
If you're interested in visiting this unique place, there is a ferry ride available. It leaves from Crisfield and drops you off at Smith Island for a few hours to explore.
Bring a bicycle and ride along the quiet roads, taking in the scenery.
Or if you're into kayaking or canoeing, this is a great place to take in the sights from the water.
You may even spot wildlife up close, like these brown pelicans. They often roost among an uninhabited portion of the island.
Or simply walk around and view all the little details, including abandoned structures. Bring a camera to remember this island that's slowly eroding away into the bay.
