Washington, DC might not technically be a part of Maryland. Well, at least not since 1790, when Maryland and Virginia donated the land on which the nation’s new capitol was to be established. However, Marylanders have been known to head into DC frequently when in search of a day of adventure. The city may be distinct from Maryland, but it’s so close that the museums, parks, and restaurants are regular destinations. And trust me when I say that this restaurant-slash-ice-cream-spot is absolutely worth the Metro ride into town. Fat Fish Rolls & Twists on The Wharf is a phenomenal place to head when you’re in need of an interesting ice cream experience and is a perfect stop for a light lunch to boot. It’s a great way for any Marylander to cap off a DC day trip!
Fat Fish is a cozy yet bright and refreshing spot on The Wharf, located in a small one-room storefront that is quite easy to find. On a bright summer day walking down here can be a real treat, not least for the promise of incredible flavor within!
When I say that Fat Fish is cozy, I really mean it. There are just a few tables in the building, which means you’ll likely be bumping elbows with your neighbors. The closeness really lends a home-made feeling to the menu items, but the windows let in tons of light, keeping it bright and open in spite of this! All the food is prepared ready-to-go, so don’t let the small seating area prevent you from visiting. If you come with a small party, you’ll probably be able to find a table.
All the sushi rolls are prepared by hand in the open kitchen, so you can watch the magic happen if you want to! Fat Fish is dedicated to providing patrons with healthy, local food - with a self-proclaimed “groovy” twist.
Fat Fish prepares classic American sushi rolls expertly, like this California roll. I find that these make a perfect light lunch, especially on warm days.
The absolute highlight of Fat Fish’s menu is their soft serve twists, served in fish-shaped waffle cones. The flavors change monthly so there’s always something new to try - this one was a twist between wild blueberry and lavender and honey-oat-vanilla, and it was spectacular, the ultimate end-of-summer flavor!
If you can’t find a seat, never fear! Just a short walk across the street will bring you to Benjamin Banneker Park, a beautiful little courtyard where you can watch the throngs of foot traffic and enjoy the summer sun.
