We Marylanders know how special our state is but when it comes to the big picture, it tends to get lost in the crowd. When people think of the U.S., states like Texas and Florida tend to stand out. Today, we’re letting people know just how underrated Maryland is.
1. Our seafood is clearly the best.
Sure, the south has crawfish, but those wimpy creatures pale in comparison to Maryland Blue Crabs.
2. Bigger doesn't always mean better.
The state may be small but it has a variety of terrain. There's so much to do and see in Maryland, it's often called America in Miniature.
3. Our Hospitals are among the best in the nation.
People travel far and wide to get treated at Johns Hopkins facilities. We're lucky to have them so close.
4. Our western region is undeniably breathtaking.
Many out-of-staters have no idea just how beautiful our rolling mountains in the western region really are.
5. We're full of talent.
So many famous athletes and celebrities are from Maryland. Michael Phelps, Katie Ledecky, Edward Norton, and William H. Macy to name a few...

There's never a dull weekend in Maryland. From food festivals to one-of-a-kind events, there's always something to do.
7. We're within driving distance to many major cities.
Being in close proximity to many major cities makes day trips a breeze. It's easy to get to New York City, Atlantic City, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, DC and more.
8. We're educated.
Maryland is consistently ranked among the top 10 most educated states.
9. We have one of the best beaches in the country.

Battlefields, forts, monuments, and more historic spots can be visited all over the state.

Fishing is abundant because we have so many bodies of water. From our man-made lakes to the Chesapeake Bay to the ocean, you can catch a variety of fish at every turn.

Dozens of scenic parks cover the state. Hike to your heart's content.
15. Prefer islands? We've got those too.
Whether it's a barrier island full of horses or one of the bay islands, a day surrounded by water views is doable in Maryland.
16. We still retain agricultural roots.
Local farms are still an important part of Maryland culture. Be sure to shop at farmers markets to show support and experience some of the freshest food around.
17. We have some of the most top ranked restaurants in the world.
Baltimore's Woodberry Kitchen was just named one of the best restaurants in the world by Condé Nast Traveler. This is only one of hundreds of state restaurants worth visiting.
18. Our sports teams aren't too shabby.
