If you grew up in Maryland or have lived here for a while, then you've likely visited the C & O Canal at least once. The towpath stretches for 184.5 miles, from Washington DC to Cumberland, Maryland.
In the western Maryland portion near Oldtown (milepost 155.2 to be exact), you'll begin seeing signs for Paw Paw Tunnel.
Construction on this historic tunnel began in 1836 and took a whopping 14 years to complete. It was finally opened in 1850 and was used by canal boats until 1924.
Now, this magnificent structure lies abandoned but you can still explore it. The exterior details are rustic and often covered in moss, while the interior can be a bit spooky.
Be sure to bring a flashlight because Paw Paw Tunnel is 3,118 feet long. If you're afraid of dark and enclosed spaces, then you may want to sit this one out.
After you make it through the tunnel, then you can continue on your journey along the scenic towpath. This area is perfect for lovers of nature, history, and abandoned sites.
