There’s a tiny community in Maryland that’s unlike any other. This unique spot has a vast history and is located in a remarkable setting. If you’re up for a one-of-a-kind day trip, then check out the following place at least once.
Smith Island is Maryland's only offshore inhabited island. It's located on the bay and is only reachable by boat.
The island is made up of various sections. Some spots are inhabited by locals, while even more sections are home to waterbirds, especially heron and pelicans.
The history of the island goes way back and many of the local families have resided here for generations. They even have their own Smith Island accent, which is unlike any other.

Once you arrive, you'll be greeted with a view similar to this. You'll most likely spot local watermen crabbing and fishing, which is the main occupation among Smith Islanders.
While this place has been around for centuries, some of the homes you'll see are updated and charming...
... while others have been left abandoned and deteriorating. The island has been slowly eroding for a long time so most of the homes are found along higher elevation.
Explore the island by foot, or bring a bicycle and bike along the paved paths.
Those who love canoeing and kayaking can take to the waterways and really see all off the little nooks and crannies.
There aren't too many dining options on Smith Island, but you will find Bayside Inn.
This eatery has some of the freshest blue crabs you'll ever taste...
... and of course, you'll want to end your meal (and your day trip) with a slice of classic Smith Island Cake. This dessert originated on the island when it was made for watermen for their long oyster harvest. Fudge was used because it lasted longer than buttercream icing.
