It’s natural to assume things about other states based on stereotypes and news stories. It’s not surprising that Marylanders get questioned about their state and culture often. Today we’re putting some of those questions to rest with the following list. Here are 12 things people ask when they know you’re from Maryland.
1) Why do you guys like crabs so much?
Because they're delicious and with crab season only being a few months out of the year, we engorge while we can.
2) What's in Old Bay, anyway?
Magic. It's made of magic.
3) What's Baltimore REALLY like?
It has its bad parts, but we don't let that overshadow the good parts. There's still plenty to do in Baltimore as long as you know where to go.
4) Aren't Marylanders crazy drivers?
Those from out-of-state may find our driving habits aggressive. We prefer to think of our swift vehicular maneuvering as smart.
5) Do you watch The Wire?
Yes. And we miss it so much.
6) Is Maryland a northern or southern state?
Technically, since it falls below the Mason-Dixon Line, it's south. BUT it was a border state during the Civil War. Some say north, some say south. It's up for debate.
7) So are you rooting for Martin O'Malley?
Hahahaha!!! Good one. Marylanders are very passionate about how they feel about O'Malley these days...
8) You must be a Ravens fan, huh?
While most of our state bleeds purple, we also have our share of Redskins fans, and to the west, those who consider themselves part of Steelers Nation.
9) Why is Maryland so expensive?
Maryland has some of the highest median incomes in the country so generally speaking, the higher the rent. Add on taxes, and it can be pretty pricey to live here. However, the further away you live from the city, the cheaper the housing. There are actually some very affordable spots in our state, you just have to find them.
10) So, is Baltimore the capital?
Nope. It's Annapolis. Pictured above is the iconic Maryland State House.
11) Why are Marylanders obsessed with their flag?
Who wouldn't be? Just look at it!
12) So what's Maryland like?
We have mountains in the west and beaches in the east. We have cities, farmlands, and the Bay. We're full of culture and diversity. We're America in miniature and oh so proud.
