Summer may be slipping away, but that doesn’t mean we can’t take advantage of cooler weather and explore the beautiful outdoors. For instance, did you realize Maryland had its very own Niagara Falls? Muddy Creek Falls of Swallow Falls State Park may not compare in height, but it certainly rivals the beauty of America’s most iconic waterfall. And with so much recent rainfall, this cascade is all the more mesmerizing. Welcome to Swallow Falls State Park, a breathtaking array of hardwood forests, shaded trails, and of course, the namesake series of cascades and waterfalls. The park can be found just nine miles north of Oakland.
The Youghiogheny River meanders through the property of this beloved state park, creating a series of cascades and waterfalls that can only be described as mesmerizing.
The crown jewel of the park is Muddy Creek Falls, which crashes down 53 feet and creates an unforgettable spectacle. The falls can be admired from a staircase platform, which is perfect for taking photographs or enjoying the surroundings.
So whether you visit for an afternoon or stay all weekend, you'll be delighted to have experienced this incredibly underrated natural attraction in Maryland.
