Every state has their share of special town names, including Maryland. Most of these towns were named for their historical origins but that doesn’t make them any less fun to say out loud. Here are 15 of the strangest town names in Maryland.
1) Accident
Spotting this sign may startle some passersby. Accident is located in Garrett County and locals refer to their small population as "Accidentals."
2) Funkstown
We can't take you to Funky Town but we can most definitely take you to Funkstown, MD. Funkstown is located in Washington County and is oftentimes confused for part of Hagerstown.
3) Indian Head
Indian Head was named in honor of its Native American roots. This town also has the youngest Mayor in Maryland history, Brandon Paulin - age 19.
4) Chevy Chase
When non-Marylanders hear the name Chevy Chase they may think of this guy. We know better.
5) Fruitland
Located on the eastern shore, this town was named to reflect the agricultural aspects of the region.
6) Friendsville
This town name gives you the warm fuzzies but it was actually named after its first settler, John Friend.
7) Pittsville
Despite the name, this town isn't filled with Spartan pits, or Brad Pitts for that matter.
8) Port Tobacco
It's no surprise that this Maryland town was named after its main export crop during the 17th century.
9) Secretary
Secretary was named after Secretary Creek, which is now known as Warwick River.
10) Deer Park
When someone hears the words Deer Park they may think of the bottled water company, and they are absolutely correct! The Deer Park brand began in the natural springs of the Maryland Appalachian Mountains.

11) Crapo is located in Dorchester County. Many folks road trip here to take photos with the Crapo signs. We may or may not recommend this.
12) Boring
Yaaawwwwn. Boring consists of a few dozen homes, fire company, church, and post office.
13) Savage
Savage, MD was named after John Savage Williams. But it's okay to let your imagination run wild with other founders.
14) Seat Pleasant
As you approach this road sign it's almost always a reminder to sit politely.
15) Hancock
Make fun of the name all you want, Hancock has some of the most beautiful nature scenery in the state.
