As one of the original colonies, Maryland has plenty of fascinating history to discover. One place in particular known as St. Mary’s City was the very first city established in Maryland and offers a unique insight into the history of the land and its people. This former colonial town is now run by the state and makes for an unforgettable day trip should you find yourself in the area. Let’s take a look at this ancient town that’s positively loaded with history:
What was once an early colonial settlement now stands as living history museum that welcomes visitors from near and far to this unique corner of Maryland. The historic site is where the colony of Maryland was first founded in the early seventeenth century.
In 1634, two ships named the Ark and the Dove carried the first settlers that arrived to Maryland from Europe. St. Mary's city is now home to this full working replica of the Dove.
The settlement was made in what is now designated at St. Mary's city due to the idyllic location on a bluff overlooking the St. Mary's River, which leads to the Potomac.
Prior to the arrival of the English settlers, the area was inhabited by the Yaocomico village. The Native Americans moved away from their village and sold their land. For a time, the native tribes and the Maryland settlers existed peacefully as allies, engaging in trade and other shared skills.
A visit to St. Mary's City today offers the chance to explore what is now a living museum in tribute of Maryland's early history. Staff dressed in period costumes offer an incredible insight into the unique and complicated history of early Maryland settlement.
While many of the buildings have been reconstructed or refurbished, little has changed in the landscape of this 1600's settlement. Walking around St. Mary's, you'll feel completely immersed in history and the land.
St. Mary’s City offers living history demonstrations Wednesday through Sunday from 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. To learn more about this unique archeological site, be sure to visit the official website here. St. Mary’s City is located at 18751 Hogaboom Lane, Saint Mary’s City, MD 20686.
