The mornings are cooler. The sky grows a bit brighter every day. In my neighborhood, the leaves have already started to fade from green to paler shades of yellow. Autumn is upon us, and I am quite thrilled with this development. I am not one for Maryland’s sweltering summer days, but once those leaves start to drop you’ll find me wandering around outside enjoying the weather, warm beverages, and partaking in all the haunted happenings our state has to offer. Princess Anne, Somerset County’s crown jewel of hauntings, is one I’m particularly keen on. Princess Anne is a gorgeous town brimming with interesting history, and that history has lent it a ghostly autumn vibe that is perfect for making a day trip across the bay this fall!
Princess Anne is the county seat of Somerset County, which is the southernmost county in Maryland. The town is small, but it is full of historic architecture - most of the buildings in the old town have been preserved since at least the 1800s.
The beautiful Boxwood Garden has been around since at least the early 19th century, and some believe that the first traces of it were planted here in Princess Anne by the son of a captain who served in the American Revolution!
The jail known as the Grey Eagle in Princess Anne is home to perhaps one of the more infamous ghost stories Maryland has to offer. It was the site of a brutal and tragic lynching in the 1930s, and several prisoners were killed within its walls throughout its history. There are said to be specters of these events still roaming about.
The Teackle Mansion is also said to be a haunted spot, though this ghost is said to have simply loved her house so much she refused to leave even after death. And with a house this architecturally astounding, I can’t say I blame her.
Princess Anne is also home to an inn where George Washington himself once stayed the night. There’s a restaurant located in there now, so you can wind down with lunch where the first president once slept after exploring all the spooky locations.
A good ghost story always puts me in the mood for some light-hearted fun to cleanse the proverbial palette, and luckily Princess Anne’s crafts market has just the remedy!
