Love the outdoors? Love autumn? Then you’ll no doubt want to check out the following spots in Maryland this fall! These 7 short and sweet hikes are worth the (easy) effort.
1. Maryland Heights Trail (Knoxville)
There's a moderate 2.5 mile trail that leads to this spot overlooking Harper's Ferry, West Virginia. This place is a must-visit anytime of year, but autumn truly enhances the sights.

2. Swallow Falls State Park (Oakland)
This western Maryland park is located in Oakland and every square inch of this place is gorgeous. Here you can find Muddy Creek Falls and Swallow Falls and the hike in between the two is only 1.25 miles in length.

3. Washington Monument State Park (Middletown)
This Washington County park features a historic stone structure known as Washington Monument. You don't have to wander far at all to find this site, and the view from the top is stupendous.

4. Kilgore Falls - Falling Branch Trail (Jarrettsville)
The hike to Kilgore Falls is a mere 1.2 miles. While this spot is popular during summertime with visitors who like to splash around, autumn provides a more quiet experience. The surrounding foliage adds the perfect little details to the area.

5. Patapsco Valley State Park - Grist Mill Trail
There are many short and sweet trails at Patapsco Valley State Park, but Grist Mill Trails truly provides variety. This trail is only 2.5 miles from end to end and along the way you'll see swinging bridges, tunnels, water views, and even a nearby waterfall known as Cascade Falls.

6. Catoctin Mountain Park - Wolf Rock & Chimney Rock Trail (Thurmont)
The most popular loop trail here is 3.3 miles in length and it offers stunning overlook views. When you arrive at Chimney Rock overlook, be sure to sit for a while and take in the moment.

7. Calvert Cliffs State Park -
Red Trail (Lusby)
To avoid crowds, arrive at this Lusby park early and hike the 1.8 mile trail to the cliffs. Many people visit here during summer but autumn is when it cliffs truly come to life as they become emblazoned with hues of red, orange, and yellow.
