We love a short and sweet trail, especially when the views are as beautiful as this. Check out this local hiking spot in Maryland that’s little known but so worth seeking out. No matter what time of year you visit, you’re sure to enjoy the sights — yes, even during winter! Read on for the details, bundle up, and go exploring!
Today's adventure takes us to the Owings Mills area, which is located in Baltimore County.
That's where you'll find Serpentine Trail...
...which is one of a handful of trails at Soldiers Delight Natural Environment Area. This area covers 1,900 acres of serpentine barren.
It's also known to be the home of rare plant species, insects, rocks, and minerals. (Cyclists and equestrians are prohibited due to the sensitive nature of the area).
But hikers are most certainly allowed, and there's a lot to see along the way.
Out of all of the trails offered, Serpentine Trail is a favorite among visitors for its mostly flat trek, its easy 2.4 miles in length, and diverse views. Walk through stretching fields...
...and wondrous woodland spots.
See how many different types of trees and plants you can identify.
Walk along the babbling brook...
...and keep your eyes peeled for an abandoned car. The deteriorating details are great for photographing.
Serpentine Trail is even great for exploring during wintertime. Sure, there won't be as many rare trees and plants, but this area is quiet and picture perfect with a fresh coat of snow.
The park is open every day from 9am to sunset. And of course, the views are especially spectacular nearing sunset.
