Maryland’s western shore is an oft-underappreciated way to experience the beauty of a morning on the Chesapeake Bay. Most people tend to imagine their getaways on the water across the Bay Bridge or even all the way out to Ocean City, completely forgetting that the near side of the bay can be just as beautiful a spot for a relaxing beach weekend. This cabin, located in a town called Scotland, is one such place. So pack your swimsuits, grab the sunscreen, and get ready to tell the whole family and/or office about your incredible sun-soaked weekend kayaking along the coast in Scotland. I’m sure the initial confused looks you’re bound to receive will be the cherry on top of this magnificent adventure!
Scotland, Maryland is located right at the southernmost end of the state, at the convergence point between the Potomac River and the Chesapeake Bay. This cabin is on a beautiful piece of land right at the bay, in a quiet neighborhood that’s just perfect for a relaxing getaway.
While it may not be the first thought of most when thinking about a beach getaway, I find the colors and the brightness of the decor extraordinarily inviting and relaxing. The kitchen is open and bright and blends right into the living room, perfect for enjoying a cup of coffee and a light beach read in the morning.
The beds are cozy and have an equal amount of that classic beach house atmosphere, but the neighborhood is so quiet that I can guarantee you’ll sleep so well you won’t want to leave.
Right out front of the cabin, there’s a small sandbar and easy access to the dock. You’re effectively waking up and heading straight out to the bay. A day of exploration and exercise can be made easily possible here, because…
…Kayaks are provided in your booking fee, as are an assortment of crab pots! Just drop the pots in the water in the morning, head out on the kayaks for an adventure…
Not only is this cabin right on the shore of the Chesapeake, but it looks back on Point Lookout State Park. This park is home to one of Maryland’s spookiest haunted lighthouses, and is right at your fingertips if you decide on some ghost hunting.
You’re also mere minutes away from the Smith Island Ferry, which you can hop on if you’re feeling like trying their famous Smith Island Cake - 8 layers of yellow cake topped with rich chocolate fudge frosting!
At the end of the day, you can enjoy relaxing on the end of a private dock in Scotland, drink in hand, without having to leave the country - or even the state!
