Maryland isn’t exactly an enormous state – it would only take a little bit of time to drive across the whole thing, unlike somewhere like, say, Texas, which would take an entire day. Despite the pint-sized nature of the state, it’s filled with incredible history and beautiful small towns. The town of Oxford is particularly special; this itty-bitty town is one of the oldest in the United States, and it’s got a population of fewer than 1,000 residents – but it’s filled to the brim with fun things to do, see, and experience. You’ll see why we truly feel like Oxford is one of the top three best small towns in Maryland:
However, it's been around for longer than that; the earliest record of its existence is its appearance on a map in 1670. History buffs will adore this beautiful little slice of paradise, and even those who don't care much for history will fall in love with it.

It's a quaint, quiet little seaside town, and it attracts boaters and boating families for obvious reasons.
Even if you don't have your own boat, no worries: you can rent one from Dockside Boat Rentals. Spend a day with your family, friends, or anyone you do choose on the sparkling blue water.
Despite being less than one square mile in size, the town has a long list of activities and ideas for killing time, relaxing, or otherwise enjoying the scenery.
Other than the boat rentals (which we definitely recommend!), there's always the luxurious experience of simply relaxing on the beach and watching the world go by. We also strongly suggest that you take one of the most historic ferry rides in the world; the Oxford-Bellevue Ferry has been in business for more than 330 years. Who else can say that? Ferry across the river and enjoy ocean views second to none. Find the ferry port at 27456 Oxford Road, Oxford, Maryland, 21654. It operates from April through November, so plan accordingly!
Stay a while and sleep at the Robert Morris Inn, which was once the childhood home of one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence.
It proudly holds the title of the oldest full-service inn in the country. Come see what traditional American life was about. Find it at 314 North Morris Street, Oxford, Maryland, 21654.
Pay a visit to the Oxford Museum, which proudly boasts more than 300 years of Oxford's history, and then hit the shops downtown.
You'll find some unique places downtown; it's got everything from stunning historic homes to intriguing old-school architecture galore. Did you know that Maryland is also home to a place that TripAdvisor called one of the top five best ice cream shops in Maryland? It's true - find Scottish Highland Creamery at 314 Tilghman Street, Oxford, Maryland, 21654. You'll want to come back again and again - we promise. It only makes sense that one of the best small towns in Maryland is home to one of the best ice cream shops there is!
Nothing beats an ocean sunset at the end of the day, and Oxford, Maryland, has more than plenty of those.
The summers are humid but the winters are mild, and overall, Oxford is an incredible place. Who knew a town so small (and so ancient) could have so many great things to do?
