We all know there are beautiful places in Maryland gorgeous enough to be in the movies, but some actually have been. The Blair Witch Project was a 1999 horror film shot in the found footage style. It's been such an inspiration to so many movies since that it's hard to remember how original it was at the time! The Blair Witch Project was filmed in Maryland and takes place in the historic village of Burkittsville. Other locations that you can spot in the film are Rockville, Wheaton, and Gaithersburg, among others. This is undoubtedly one of the most famous movies set in Maryland.
Most of us know that the famous musical Hairspray is set in Baltimore, and the 1988 film version that inspired it was partially filmed in Charm City. This hilarious comedy was shot in the Washington D.C. area and along the eastern shore. When watching, you might spot the Inn at Perry Cabin in St. Michael's.
Not long after Hairspray, John Waters directed Cry-Baby. The musical romantic comedy has a star-studded cast that includes a young Johnny Depp, Iggy Pop, and Ricki Lake. Part of the movie takes place at the Enchanted Forest Park in Ellicott City. The amusement park has since closed, but you can see plenty of locations that still exist, like Hampden, Reisterstown, Jessup, and Sykesville.
Runaway Bride was a huge hit with crowds and marked the second time Richard Gere and Julia Roberts had starred in a romantic comedy together, after 1990's Pretty Woman. Most of the movie production for Runaway Bride took place in Berlin. You can even see this tea shop along Main Street in the movie.
One of the funniest scenes in this mockumentary takes place at a driving school where the title character is learning to drive a car. The scene was filmed in Perry Hall.
This biographical drama about the founding of Facebook won multiple Academy Awards and Golden Globes when it was released. Parts of the film take place while Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg was attending college. A few of the university scenes were shot at Baltimore's Johns Hopkins University campus.
This hit romantic comedy starring Matthew McConaughey and Sarah Jessica Parker features quite a few scenes filmed in Maryland. You can see bits of Baltimore, Oxford, St. Michael's, and Annapolis throughout the movie.
National Treasure was released in 2004 and the film was a huge success, so it's no wonder that a sequel followed up three years later. Parts of National Treasure: Book of Secrets was shot at University of Maryland College Park.
10. Live Free or Die Hard (2007) and Die Hard with a Vengeance (1995)
Live Free or Die Hard is the fourth installment of the immensely popular Die Hard franchise, and it was preceded by Die Hard With a Vengeance. Parts of Live Free or Die Hard were filmed in Baltimore. You might be able to recognize East Lexington Street and North Calvert Street. Parts of Die Hard with a Vengeance were filmed in Jessup.
Ladder 49 starred John Travolta and Joaquin Phoenix as firemen in a Baltimore fire department. This building at the Baltimore waterfront was used in several shots. You might also be able to recognize a few places around Annapolis.
This film starring Charlie Sheen has several scenes that were filmed at Camden Yards. The stadium was disguised to look like Cleveland Stadium, which was to be demolished just a few years after the film was released. In the film, the Orioles scoreboard reads "Welcome to Cleveland Stadium."
This romantic comedy was based on a self-help book of the same name. The film takes places in Baltimore and was mostly filmed around the area. It's got a star-studded ensemble cast that includes Ben Affleck, Jennifer Aniston, Bradley Cooper, and Kris Kristofferson.
This coming-of-age film centers on a group of recent graduates from Georgetown University. Most of the movie was shot at the University of Maryland College Park, but you can also spot a few places from around D.C. This is one of the most classic movies made in Maryland.
