While perusing the site recently, I came across the following listing located right here in Maryland. After researching a bit more, I discovered that this little known castle actually holds a fascinating and haunting history. Read on to learn more, and consider staying the night here for an unforgettable experience.
The current airbnb listing refers to this historic structure as a Victorian Gothic Castle Mansion. A little poking and prodding around the web reveals that it's also known as Lilburn Mansion, and originally, Hazelhurst Mansion.
The original owner was Henry Richard Hazelhurst and he lived here with his family. Tragedy struck this family more than once and it's rumored that the wife and at least one child died in the mansion.
Several families occupied the home in the following years, claiming to hear footsteps in the castle-esque tower, a chandelier mysteriously swinging back and forth, and windows refusing to close.
The faint scent of cigar smoke sometimes lingers in the air, and shadowy apparitions of a man and small girl have been reported. Could it be that the ghost of Mr. Hazelhurst and his family still inhabit these walls?
Don't let these tales frighten you away. In fact, staying here is quite a pleasant experience. The rich furniture and antique surroundings are rustically charming.
Some people choose to host events here, including weddings and wedding receptions. Many spots throughout the grounds make the perfect backdrop for photos.
