Asian-style BBQ restaurants just hit the spot sometimes, particularly when those times involve getting a big group of friends together to pig out on a bunch of meat that you grilled yourself. And fortunately for us Marylanders there’s Gyuzo Japanese BBQ in Rockville, a fantastic traditional yakiniku restaurant with a range of modern twists that’s sure to make your evening out memorable. Whether you’re already a fan of Korean BBQ who’s looking for a slightly different vibe, or if you’re just brand new to the whole thing, we highly recommend checking this place out!
Gyuzo takes its name from a phrase meaning “the treasure of the bull” - quite befitting
considering the phenomenal cuts of beef you’ll be presented with when you cross the
threshold.
The dining room decor is a modern take on classic Japanese style. The empty sake barrels
lining the walls transport you to a time of samurai and daimyo, and they promise a fun-filled
evening with friends.
The trademark of Japanese-style BBQ is yakiniku - literally translated as “grilled meat”. Inspired
by the famous Korean BBQ experience, the yakiniku menu offers a wide selection of a la carte
cuts that patrons grill themselves.
The menu at Gyuzo offers more than just traditional Japanese BBQ fare, however. There are
many interesting fusion items available as appetizers, like the shrimp-potato salad wontons.
A personal favorite dish of mine is the Japanese golden curry. It’s a curry with just the right
amount of heat, but it also has an added sweetness that balances perfectly and creates an
excellent meal for any occasion.
Of course, no yakiniku spot would be complete without a wide variety of sakes, and Gyuzo
runs the gamut with theirs. If you’re having trouble deciding, they offer flights at the
spectacularly-decorated bar.
Maryland has no shortage of excellent Asian-style BBQ restaurants sure to satisfy your craving. If you’re a little too far south for Rockville, then we suggest giving this Korean BBQ spot down in Lexington Park a visit!
