Did you know that a tiny Maryland town was the setting of a cult classic horror film? It’s true. While the following historic village isn’t well known to some, it’s highly known to horror fans across the world. Read on for the story of Burkittsville, Maryland.
In Maryland's Frederick County lies the small and peaceful town of Burkittsville.
With a population of under 200 residents, things remain quiet... for the most part.
While Burkittsville would most like to be known for its serene setting and history, across the globe it's known as the home of the Blair Witch.
In 1999 The Blair Witch Project movie became an instant hit, featuring alleged eerie found footage in the woods of Burkittsville.
Parts of the movie were also filmed in the tiny town, including the cemetery atop of the hill. Horror genre fans flocked to this peaceful haven, seeking clues that the Blair Witch was real.
It didn't help that people started to claim creepy sightings, and today, dozens of videos circulate about this little area of Maryland.

As far as we know, the stories are false.
While this town is worth visiting for its historic landmarks and photo ops, it's not quite the creepy village it's known to be.
It does, however, have a gravity hill known to locals as Spook Hill. Put your car in neutral at the "bottom" of this optical illusion hill, and be blown away as you seem to be pushed up by something paranormal.

This town is literally straight out of a horror movie, and will be plagued as spooky for years to come. However, this Maryland gem is far from horrific and is a great place to explore if you enjoy charming tiny towns.
