There are plenty of festivals in Maryland throughout the year, all offering a variety of things to see, do, and eat. If you only have time for one, make sure it’s the National Hard Crab Derby in Crisfield. This traditional event is going on its 70th year, only getting better with time. Check it out, and bring your appetite.
Crisfield is a cozy bay town known for its watermen. They work tirelessly catching a variety of seafood, especially blue crabs.
The National Hard Crab Derby Festival is held here every year and it includes festival basics like carnival rides...
A multitude of unique vendors...
And a quirky parade.
What's not so ordinary are the crabby festivities that are one-of-a-kind. Gather around the bleachers to witness the exciting crab picking contest.
Seeing the contestants pick crabs at astonishing speeds is fascinating to see in person.
Things get even more interesting as the Hard Crab Derby commences. Race numbers are drawn onto the shells of live blue crabs and they're then placed into tiny pens.
As the pens are released, dozens of blue crabs scuttle to the bottom where one will be declared the winner.
The crowd really gets into the festivities, making this spirited festival even more fun.
Oh, and the best part? All of the food. Check out the crab cooking contest for some of the most delectable dishes you've ever laid your eyes upon.
