Fort McHenry is located on Locust Point, a neighborhood in Baltimore, Maryland, situated on the harbor.
The eponymous fort is most famous for its part in the Battle of Baltimore. On September 13-14, 1814, it was the location of a major U.S. history against the British Navy.
Throughout the Fort, old cannons used to protect and defend can be seen pointing out towards the harbor.
Although the historical significance is a major appeal to visitors, so are the ghost stories.
Staff members and visitors alike have reported seeing phantom soldiers both inside the fort, as well as "patrolling" the borders. Fort McHenry was a location that contained Confederate soldiers as prisoners of war -- and many believe they are still locked up in these walls.
In the battle of Fort McHenry during the war of 1812, four American soldiers, along with 330 British soldiers perished. But are they really gone?
Putting the ghost tales aside, it's important to note that during that legendary battle, "The Star-Spangled Banner" was born, as Francis Scott Key observed the battle from a distance.
Taking a trip to Fort McHenry is a wonderful way to learn about one of the most remarkable events in U.S. history. Plus, maybe you'll see a spirit or two -- you never know!
