We’ve featured a Western Maryland road trip and some of the most underrated places along the Eastern Shore. Now, it’s time we dive into some of Southern Maryland’s most impressive attractions. Many people tend to pass right by this area of the state but they’re missing out. We could go on and on about what makes this area so unique, but we’ll let the following 10 attractions do the talking for us.
The history of St. Mary's City goes way back and you can learn all about it at this hands-on attraction. Witness historic ships up close, participate in fun colonial games, and see what farming was like in the 17th-century. All ages will enjoy this fun (and educational) spot.

A scenic 1.8 mile hike will lead you to these white clay cliffs at Calvert Cliffs State Park. Once you arrive at this bay beach, feel free to search for fossils. You may even find giant Megalodon teeth!

This place is like an aquarium, science center, and maritime museum all rolled into one. Visit with live animals, including otters, turtles, and all sorts of bay fish. Learn about the history of southern Maryland, including its first residents. Lastly, head outside for a walk along the boardwalk and then climb the stairs to the top of the on-site lighthouse.

Considering this area was once a prisoner of war camp during the Civil War, it's full of history (and maybe a ghost or two). Head here during the day for a hike or to simply enjoy the water views. Or if you're feeling brave, camp out for the weekend. Some claim to experience ghostly encounters once the sun goes down.

This Maryland bay is known as the "largest shipwreck fleet in the Western Hemisphere." Over 100 ships from WWI were abandoned here years ago and today, you can still kayak or canoe over the rusting ruins.

This is another beach in southern Maryland where you can hunt for fossils but its layout is quite a bit different than the previously mentioned Calvert Cliffs. Natural pools are spread throughout, which are perfect for wading or for little ones to safely splash around. Of course, you can also head to the bay area and swim or simply soak in the sun.
