Read on to learn more about the historic canal boat rides and consider partaking in this bucket list worthy adventure yourself. So much scenery (and history) awaits!
You'll find the Great Falls Tavern Visitor Center at 11710 MacArthur Blvd in Potomac, Maryland.
Stop at the visitor center to learn about this portion of the C & O Canal, and be sure to pick up a canal boat ticket here, too.
Then, you'll board the canal boat, which usually runs on Saturday and Sunday at 11am and 2pm. Be aware that the boat currently has a limit of 15 riders at a time due to COVID precautions. Riders must also wear a face covering, regardless of vaccination status.
Your adventure will last approximately 45 minutes. During this time, you'll rise 8-feet in a lock, and learn what life was like for people living along and working on the canal back in the late 1800s.
The tour guides will also be dressed in period clothing, adding to the authentic experience. Prepare to be transported back in time.
After your canal boat ride, consider walking a bit to enjoy the surrounding scenery.
And remember that the C & O Canal actually stretches for 184.5-miles, from DC to Cumberland. This one little area is only the beginning.
