If you grew up in Maryland, then you most likely were taught about the Battle of Antietam, and you may have even taken several field trips to Antietam Battlefield. By far, the most iconic spot at Antietam Battlefield is Bloody Lane. It also just may be the most haunted place in the state. Read on to see why.
On September 17, 1862, the battle of Antietam took place in Sharpsburg, Maryland. This Civil War battle between the Confederates and Union became known as the bloodiest single-day battle in American history.
The combined total number of soldiers dead, wounded, or missing was almost 23,000.
Since most of the battle took place around what was then referred to as Sunken Road, several people died in this eroded lane. More bodies were then moved there until proper burial could take place.
Today, you can walk along what is now known as Bloody Lane. It's a humbling experience that everyone should do at least once.
Visitors have reported paranormal occurrences here including smelling the faint scent of gunpowder, and even spotting full-body apparitions.
Faint whispers and even ghostly screams are rumored to be heard if you listen closely enough.
Walk amongst the dead at this fascinating historical place in Maryland, that some say is the most haunted spot in the entire state.
