When there’s a cause for celebration, there is no better stop than a family-style restaurant. When you’re gathered together, watching the faces of your friends and loved ones light up as plates of delicious food are placed on the table before you, there’s a special atmosphere of joy that just cannot be outdone. And the feeling is catching. All around you, you’re sure to hear the excited conversations of friends catching up, of coworkers making bets on who can eat the most, and of families celebrating milestones. If you happen to be around Ellicott City’s Korean Way the next time you have some celebrating to do, or if you’re just really, really hungry, then you cannot miss this restaurant serving Korean-style Chinese food in Maryland, HanJoongKwan.
Korean-style Chinese cuisine is a unique blend of two culinary traditions, which results in some truly mind-blowing dishes. And HanJoongKwan, located on the stretch of highway known as Ellicott City’s Korean Way, serves this food better than anywhere else in Maryland.
The close and comfortable dining room is perfect for pairs or big groups. The more the merrier at this Maryland restaurant, as the dishes are expected to feed the entire table!
Korean-style Chinese food is usually served with a side dish of bright yellow pickled radish, some raw onion, and a sweet-and-savory black bean sauce. The crisp salty sweetness of the radish makes it one of my personal favorite sides.
HanJoongKwan makes some of Maryland’s best yakimandoo, the fried dumplings that are sure to please everyone seated around the table. You can mix your own dipping sauce using the staple ingredients of Korean-style Chinese food - soy sauce, vinegar, and Korean chili flakes!
Two of the most famous Korean-Chinese dishes are sweet-and-sour pork, called tangsuyuk, and noodles in black bean sauce, or jajangmyeon. The tangsuyuk is crispy and delightfully sour, while the jajangmyeon sauce tends to have chunks of hearty pork and chopped onion. Not to worry - HanJoongKwan offers combo platters if you can’t decide between them!
The third dish you’re guaranteed to see on any Korean-Chinese menu is jjampong, the spicy noodle-and-seafood soup that will definitely warm you up on a chilly autumn night. It comes in a big bowl, perfect for sharing with the whole family - or with everyone who can take the heat!
Korean beer is the ideal beverage companion to all these strong flavors. It’s crisp, refreshing, and comes in large bottles that can be shared as well.
Make sure you follow HanJoongKwan on Facebook for updates to hours, or to place an order – they do takeout as well as dine-in! Will you be visiting this Maryland restaurant for your next celebration? Let us know in the comments!
