Maryland’s extensive history lends itself to incredible attractions, such as historic mansions, gorgeous museums, and perhaps unsurprisingly, plenty of haunted locations.
In fact, one of the most haunted hiking trails in the country can be found at the Antietam National Battlefield. Here’s more on this chilling trek that you definitely won’t want to visit by yourself:
Located in northwestern Maryland, Antietam National Battlefield commemorates the single bloodiest battle of the Civil War, where 23,000 Union and Confederate soldiers were either wounded or killed on September 17th, 1862.
A visit to these grounds and National Cemetery provides incredible insight into the history of the American Civil War as well as the hardships endured on site.
The National Battlefield spans over 5 square miles in size, and there are trails that wind alongside the creek and the open fields to offer visitors a walking tour of this unforgotten day in history.
While there's no denying the haunted nature of this historic landmark, some argue that the trails themselves are haunted, holding with them the restless spirits of those who lives were lost.
There are countless reports of visitors who have experienced paranormal activity along Bloody Lane. Perhaps the most disturbing is one account of marching soldiers in Uniform, which one visitor believed to be a reenactment until seeing the figures vanish into thin air.
So if you plan on visiting this iconic American landmark, you might consider bringing someone with you in case you encounter something paranormal!
Antietam National Battlefield is located at 302 E Main St, Sharpsburg, MD 21782. For additional reports of ghostly sightings at Antietam, you can click here.
