If you've lived in Maryland for a while, then you've probably visited or at least heard of the C & O Canal. It stretches for 184.5 miles, from Washington DC to Cumberland.
After 14 years of construction, it was used from 1850 until 1924. With construction taking so long, many tales of disgruntled workers came about, and some say men were even murdered inside the tunnel.
