Let’s face it. The weather in Maine is beautiful, but it’s not always reliable. In the summer, storms can roll in quickly, forcing us to come up with alternate plans on a moment’s notice. The easy choice might be to throw on a movie or head to binge watch a TV-show, but we prefer to continue exploring the state. This chocolate factory tour is great any day, but it’s especially great when you’re looking to make plans that don’t involve the outdoors. Or, of course, when you just want something to satisfy that sweet tooth!
Longtime Mainers (and those who love to visit!) probably know that Wilbur’s of Maine is one of the best places to satisfy a sweet tooth! It dates back to 1983 when Tom and Catherine opened a small shop in Freeport.
The expansion also sparked more creativity and in addition to carrying gifts and other chocolate, they were able to create and sell more of their own chocolates.
The Guided Factory Tour teaches visitors about the history of the shop and allows folks to see the scrumptious chocolate being made. And, what is a factory tour without samples? You’ll load up on those as well! These tours last about 30-minutes and admission is under $4.
The Hands-On Factory Tour is great for folks who want to become chocolatiers themselves one day! This tour includes the same education, but also includes the chance to make your own. Slightly longer than the first, these tours are $4.50.
The shop is always trying new things and depending on the season you can see something different being made all the time. This means multiple visits are definitely in order!
For something extra-special, be sure to pop in during holidays like Christmas, Valentine’s Day, or Easter, when the best of the best is about to hit the shelves.
Whether you take the tour is simply browse the candy, this is an unforgettable way to spend the day in Maine.
