Maine is home to many hidden gems but we are particularly fond of its covered bridges. These unique structures create picture-perfect scenes that are incredibly romantic and make you fall in love with the Pine Tree State. And while there are covered bridges that are quite well known – like the Sunday River Bridge – one of our favorites is Babb’s Bridge. When you visit, it will feel like you are taking a walk through history.

Sitting over the Presumscot River is Babb’s Bridge. This gorgeous covered bridge connects Gorham and Windham and we encourage locals and out-of-state guests alike to pay this bridge a visit.

The bridge you see today is not as old as other covered bridges in Maine, but it sure has quite a unique history.

In 1840, Babb’s Bridge was built in the area and named after a local family. It was the oldest bridge in Maine. Unfortunately, in 1973, the historic bridge was destroyed by arson.
However, vandals could not completely take away this beloved community structure, and an exact replica was built and opened to traffic in 1976. This restored bridge is what you see today.
