When it comes to the best places to view fall foliage in Maine, the options are endless. From the many state parks to small towns, there is no better time to explore the Pine Tree State than during the autumn. While there are many locations that draw in quite a crowd during this time of year, there is one under-the-radar destination with beautiful fall foliage that I recommend — Rockwood, Maine.
Rockwood, Maine is actually a small village located on the western shore of Moosehead Lake. It is not far from Mount Kineo.
Rockwood is certainly a small village with very few businesses and approximately 400 residents. But, that doesn’t matter. When you visit this area, you are there for one thing — the great outdoors.
During the fall, Rockwood offers the most breathtaking fall foliage views. Reds, oranges, and yellows - with a little bit of green mixed in - create landscapes that are just stunning.
One of the best ways to truly enjoy the autumn colors is to go on a hike, and there are several options near Rockwood that will fully immerse you in Mother Nature’s colorful creation.
Not far outside of Rockwood is the Williams Mountain Trail, which is a 2.7-mile trail with an overlook that lets you see the colorful leaves for miles. Don’t forget a camera or you will regret it!
You can always just spend some time next to the water. While Moosehead Lake is extremely popular during the summer months, in the fall, the crowds tend to dwindle, allowing you to more easily enjoy this enchanting body of water.
And there’s nothing quite like a fall getaway to Rockwood, Maine. Here, you'll find several charming vacation rentals where you can sit and stay for a while.
This cabin with a lake view is one vacation rental in Rockwood, ME to consider. It’s quaint and charming, yet still offers enough amenities to comfortably sleep six guests. It’s the perfect spot to catch a sunrise but beware — you may never want to leave.
This small village on the shore of Moosehead Lake is mesmerizing, especially during the autumn. It’s one under-the-radar destination in Maine that you’ll quickly love.
