On a chilly weekend in Maine, it can be tempting to stay inside and wish it were already spring. While there’s nothing wrong with staying cozy, we’re here to remind you that cold weather doesn’t have to mean missing out on all that Maine has to offer. One of our favorite things to do on days when it’s too cold for outdoor fun is to hop in the car and go explore a new town in Maine. Even better if that trip involves shopping. Wells is so much more than just a summer beach town!
Enjoy a day at the beach in the summer, but be sure to take some time to enjoy the shopping that's on offer as well. Or, of course, go for a winter's drive to Wells to pick up what all the tourists are missing!
Around since 1967, The Farm Antiques focuses on English period furniture and accessories from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. The store has wonderful showrooms depicting the way a room might have looked back in the day. They even have an on-premise workshop to make sure everything is in perfect condition! Carboni Antiques is a part of the Wells Union Antique Company and features beautiful pieces meant to elevate the feel of any room. Easily added to a stop while antiqueing throughout Wells, the shop is worth exploring just to see some wonderful examples of perfectly restored pieces. This shop is housed in an old and restored apple barn. There are 3 floors, making up almost 10,000 square feet of space for incredible goods. The shop is comprised of over 30 dealers and they're always growing. Visit them at: 1784 Post Road in Wells / 207-646-1499.
The store can be found in a 200 year old barn, featuring two floors of furniture, automobile artifacts (like gas pumps, signs, oil bottles and cans) as well as fun 1950s furniture, soda coolers, and candy machines. Manko might be the most unique option on this list. The family in charge has been involved in the world of American folk art & antiques for more than 40 years. Kate Manko joined her parents in the business in 2004 and together they've provided Maine (and beyond!) with a way to understand and experience important part of American culture.
