The views just keep on coming here in Maine! There are tons of hikes and mountain summits that reveal some of the most incredible sights in the state, but today we’re focused on something a bit more unique. In fact, we had no idea this spot even existed until we did a bit of research looking for new, fun views. And the Onawa Trestle certainly fits the bill!

The Onawa Trestle measures 1,230 feet and sits on concrete pillars that rise about 130 feet in the air.

It's an absolutely fantastic structure to see, even from underneath. It's the tallest and longest train trestle in the state. And many people believe it to be the biggest in all of New England.

If you'd like to explore it, the most important thing to remember is that these tracks are still very much active! And the train schedule can be unpredictable. We do not recommend walking across it, and when you stand near it, always be cautious.

The Onawa Trestle is absolutely beautiful to observe but keep in mind it is actually incredibly dangerous and illegal to walk the tracks. Safety concerns have led to the law being enforced and we would highly recommend that you follow the law for your own safety. That being said the trestle is amazing to view from far away too.
You never know when a train might approach. But, as you keep an eye out you'll love taking in that incredible view.

You can access the trestle by ATV, hike or boat. For boat access head to Onawa Road in Elliottsville Township. From here head to the boat launch 2.6 miles down the road. If you'd prefer to hike, you can begin here and make your way just over 3 miles. Eventually you'll see the tracks which will lead you east towards the trestle. The ATV trail is similar, but it's best to make sure you have a map of those.

However you manage to get here make sure you have enough time to enjoy the view from the top. Have a camera ready, or just stay awhile and remember it in your head for later. This view is a great way to remember just how lucky you are to be in Maine.

Hearing that the Onawa Trestle is dangerous and therefore illegal to walk on can be a little bit of a letdown. We get it. What are some other great train trestles to visit in Maine?

If you travel on I95 in Portland at all you most likely have seen a train trestle hanging out in the water near the B&M Bean Factory. This story of this trestle is very interesting to read and will give history next time you look out over the bay and see this odd structure. Old abandoned railroad tracks traveling near the capitol will also lead to an old trestle. Following the Rail Trail from Gardiner to Augusta you will come across Hallowell and with it an old train trestle that is stuck in time. It is an interesting find in a small quint town right here in Maine. Bonus bridge, This last one is not a train trestle but it is the largest observation bridge in the world, check it out.
