Here in Maine we’re accustomed to unexpected changes in the weather. Sunny days end with rain, windy mornings give way to beautiful beach days. But, despite this experience, nothing really prepares us for snow in May. But, looks like that’s what we’re in store for this weekend! This springtime polar vortex will have us bundled up as though it’s January!
Maine is just one of the states set to experience the effects of a cold air surge arriving in the eastern United States over the weekend. Be prepared for record-setting cold temps across the region. Especially impacted will be those on the eastern seaboard, who will see highs and lows 20 degrees below what's average for this time of year.
The National Weather Service radar shows that forecasted temps from Friday, May 8th through Saturday, May 9th will be quite frigid in a number of states. But, Maine should expect to see temps in the 20s and 30s!
Check to see what to expect depending on where you live. We were surprised to see that even the typically warmer coastal region, including places like Portland and towns further south won't be spared!
And, as if this year couldn't get any stranger, an expected 75 million people in America will be waking up to below-freezing temperatures on Saturday morning!
But, the good news is that temperatures should get higher next week for much of the state. If we can make it through just one more wintry weekend, perhaps summer really will be on the way.
Are you ready for wintertime weather in May? What are your plans to either avoid it or get out and enjoy it? The good news is that springtime weather should be back next week. And when it is, we’ll be ready to hit the outdoors again! For activity ideas when that happens, here’s the ultimate bucket list for Mainers who are obsessed with nature!
