I scream, you scream, we all scream for….sandwiches! But, not sure any sandwiches. When it comes to meals in Maine few things are as satisfying as great food while supporting local business. In a world where so many chains and big box stores are overtaking the streets, small spots like this are a dream come true. Known throughout the state, this shop is a must-visit for those who want to taste the best local Maine sandwiches in a casual, unfussy way.
Big G's Deli in Winslow is the kind of place you see from the road and automatically stop for - whether you're hungry or not!
You'll start with the menu board which is simple, but huge. Offerings come with clever names like "the "Miles Standwich" and the "Governor King" making this menu Maine through and through!
The community staple began in 1986 and since then it's gone from being a small sandwich shop to a 200-seat restaurant! The founder and co-owner Gerald Michaud, Jr. is still a major part of the operation every day.
You know what they say: Behind every good sanwich is an even better slice of bread. At Big G's Deli it takes a giant loaf of bread to make these giant sandwiches.
While we owe the size to the bread, we owe the deliciousness to the fillings. Some of the best are in varieties like the "George Carlin" which comes with roast beef, Monterey Jack, lettuce, tomatoes, pickles and onions.
And throughout the shop you're likely to see moments like this one - photos opportunities with happy folks marveling at the size of what they're about to eat.
If you get overwhelmed by the selection, consider choosing based on name. It's easy with choices such as, "47,410," the "Dudley-Do-Right" and the "Bacon Your Pardon."
